Ultra-orthodox Jew stabbed, seriously wounded in New York in possible hate crime
Incident is being investigated in the context of Israel stabbing attacks
An ultra-orthodox Jewish man is in a serious condition after he was stabbed in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday evening in an attack which was being investigated as a possible hate crime.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams stated late Tuesday night that the stabbing was being investigated in the context of the security situation in Israel, according to the Artutz Sheva news service.
"With the stabbings that are taking place in Israel, we cannot be relaxed when you investigate something of this magnitude, we need to determine if it is a hate crime, and we need to use all the video footage and whatever we can to apprehend the person," he said.
He noted that Brooklyn is 'extremely sensitive now' to the needs of the neighborhood's large ultra-orthodox community, which is due to have a convention in Crown Heights at the end of the week.
"We want to make sure that the community is safe, and that's what the police department is doing right now," he said.
The man, an off-duty medic with the Hatzolah medical organization, was walking down the street when he was stabbed from behind by an individual wearing a mask. Police said that no words were exchanged between the two prior to the attack.
