Israeli soccer champions Hapoel Beersheba delivered a surprising upset Wednesday night over three-time European champions Inter Milan, defeating the Italians 2-0 on their home turf.
Beersheba dominated the first round Europa League group stage match at Inter's San Siro stadium, with Miguel Vitor and Maor Buzalgo scoring in the 54th and 69th minutes respectively, while Inter managed only two shots on goal, the Times of Israel reports.
Beersheba's victory in the Israeli league championship in May, their first state championship after '40 years in the desert', shocked the country and propelled them into the qualifying round of the prestigious Champions League.
The Israeli club put a a furious fightback against Scottish champions Celtic, but failed to reach the Champions League group stage despite a 2-0 victory, dropping them into the Europa League competition.
Beersheva will next face England's Southhampton on September 29 in Israel.
