NASA launched its Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, beginning a mission to survey billions of galaxies, search for thousands of new exoplanets, and help scientists probe some of the universe's biggest mysteries, including whether life exists elsewhere

The telescope successfully separated from the Falcon Heavy shortly after launch, deploying its solar panels and lower instrument sunshade. NASA Goddard ground controllers confirmed all systems were functioning normally as Roman began its journey toward Lagrange Point 2, a location nearly one million miles from Earth where it will conduct its survey of the cosmos.

Roman's defining feature is its field of view, which NASA says is at least 100 times wider than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, allowing it to scan vast stretches of sky far faster than previous instruments. Through its various surveys, the telescope is expected to help identify more than 100,000 new exoplanets, while also mapping billions of galaxies to help scientists study dark matter and dark energy, two of the most significant unresolved mysteries in astrophysics.

The mission received a phone call from the White House following the launch, with officials confirming the telescope was performing well and describing the launch as another successful mission for NASA.

Beyond its technical achievements, scientists say Roman could bring humanity closer to answering a fundamental question: whether life exists elsewhere in the universe. According to NASA officials, one of the agency's central goals is determining whether Earth is alone in hosting life, a question that resonates broadly across public interest in space and science.

Roman's coronagraph instrument will block the light of distant stars, allowing scientists to study the planets orbiting them in far greater detail, including their atmospheres. Officials said the coronagraph technology represents a major advancement, enabling researchers to begin resolving the atmospheres of distant worlds and assess whether they could be habitable.

Exoplanet research is only part of Roman's broader mission. The telescope will also survey billions of galaxies to help scientists better understand dark matter and dark energy, forces that shape the structure of the universe but remain poorly understood.


NASA officials described the launch as both an ending and a beginning, marking the conclusion of years of engineering work and the start of a new era of scientific discovery. One official compared the moment to standing at the edge of the unknown, with the mission's true scientific work only just beginning.

Roman will spend approximately 90 days undergoing preparation for full science operations, with its first images expected before the end of the year. Scientists say those initial images could offer humanity its clearest look yet at previously unseen corners of the universe.
