FM Ashkenazi meets with Greek, Cypriot counterparts over regional security
Russian FM Lavrov spoke with Ashkenazi in Athens, discussing Iran's presence in Syria
Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi met with Greek and Cypriot counterparts for a trilateral meeting on Tuesday in Athens, during a two-day official visit.
The trip focused on tightening cooperation between the countries, specifically security concerns in the region. Ashkenazi singled out the threat of Iran, Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah and tensions in the East Mediterranean.
Turkey has stoked condemnation for oil exploration in the Mediterranean, despite Greek protests it is being held in Greek territorial waters. The US has called these actions "calculated provocation."
Ashkenazi met with Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Defense Minister Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos and Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias earlier. Cypriot Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides joined in ahead of noon for a trilateral meeting with his Israeli and Greek counterparts.
