Dong Jingwei would be highest-level defector ever from the People’s Republic of China

Rumors continue to circulate that Chinese spymaster Dong Jingwei has defected to the United States and shared state secrets on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dong, who has served as Vice Minister of State Security and head of counterintelligence for the Chinese Ministry of State Security, or Guoanbu, since 2018, reportedly secretly flew from Hong Kong to the US on February 10 along with his adult daughter.

The rumors claim that the information Dong provided about the Wuhan Institute of Virology may have changed US President Joe Biden's stance about where the pandemic started. Biden in May ordered a US intelligence inquiry into the origins of the pandemic - having shut a previous one down - including the possibility that the virus started with an accidental leak from the Wuhan lab.

If the rumors turn out to be true, Dong would be the highest-level defector ever from the People’s Republic of China.

Dong reportedly may also have shared information about Chinese spies working in the US and how the Chinese government was able to hack into a covert CIA communications system and steal data.

A report last year by a US government national laboratory on the origins of COVID-19 found it plausible that the virus leaked from a Chinese lab in Wuhan.
