Biden, UN Chief condemn attack on Iraqi PM
Biden said his administration would help Iraqi security forces identify those responsible
US President Joe Biden and the United Nations chief on Sunday condemned the attack that targeted Iraq's Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi
Biden said his administration would help Iraqi security forces identify those responsible.
"I strongly condemn the terrorist attack targeting the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister al-Kadhemi," Biden said in a statement.
"I am relieved the Prime Minister was not injured and commend the leadership he has shown in calling for calm, restraint, and dialogue to protect the institutions of the state and strengthen the democracy Iraqis so richly deserve."
The statement ended with, “The United States stands firmly with the government and people of Iraq as they strive to uphold Iraq’s sovereignty and independence.”
The United Nations chief also issued a statement on the attack, stating, “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the assassination attempt against Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi earlier today. He calls for the perpetrators of this crime to be held accountable.
“The United Nations will continue to stand with the people and Government of Iraq as they strive for a better future.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi escaped unhurt when an explosives-packed drone struck his Baghdad residence early Sunday. However, the attack marked a substantial escalation in the country's post-election turmoil.
The prime minister's office described the attack as a "failed assassination attempt," while Iraqi President Barham Salih called the strike, which was not immediately claimed by any group, an attempted "coup against the constitutional system."
