Report: Russia advances interim nuclear deal
The interim deal would be part of JCPOA framework rather than an independent agreement
Russia offered Iran an interim nuclear agreement as efforts to revive the 2015 deal between world powers and Tehran are at a standstill, NBC News reported Saturday.
Citing unnamed US officials, the report said the Americans are aware of the proposal, which includes limited sanctions relief in return for the re-imposition of a number of curbs on Iran’s controversial nuclear program.
The report said the interim deal would act as a first step in Iran's return to the JCPOA framework, rather than as a separate agreement.
Despite sources cited in the report saying the US gave its consent to the proposal, another official in the administration of President Joe Biden who spoke to NBC said that "an interim arrangement is not under serious discussion."
“Though we cannot speak for any discussions that may have taken place between Russia and Iran, at this stage we are certain that no such interim arrangement is being seriously discussed,” the official was quoted as saying.
