Praise and gratitude for former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley poured in from Israeli politicians on Monday after she unexpectedly announced her decision to step down from her post.
“I thank Ambassador Nikki Haley, who led an uncompromising struggle against the hypocrisy of the United Nations and the truth and justice of our country,” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, “safe trip,” he added. He warmly referred to her as “Hurricane Haley.”
President Reuven Rivlin thanked Haley for her “courage and for a term of office that will be remembered as a turning point in the relations between the US and international organizations.”
Haley throughout her tenure proved to be a vocal advocate for the State of Israel. During her time in office she presided over a host of favorable decisions where she repeatedly defended the country on the international stage. Meanwhile, her relations with the Palestinian Authority soured.
Thank you Amb. Haley for standing for the truth and exposing hypocrisy at the UN. Just as the people of Israel are grateful for the rock solid support @POTUS Trump has provided Israel in the Oval Office, we are grateful for the rock solid support you’ve provided Israel at the UN. pic.twitter.com/RFQ7u3lOvI— Benjamin Netanyahu (@netanyahu) October 9, 2018
“We stood up for our ally Israel and began to roll back the UN’s relentless bias against her,” Haley wrote in her resignation letter addressed to US President Donald Trump, as she noted her “great successes” vis-a-vis Israel amongst other diplomatic matters.
“Dear Amb @NikkiHaley, on behalf of the Israeli people: Thank you for what you’ve done for Israel,” Education Minister and leader of the right-wing Jewish Home party Naftali Bennett tweeted, “we will not forget.”
Echoing the words of praise, deputy foreign minister and member of Likud applauded the “amazing work” Haley had done “defending and protecting the values that both Israel and the US hold dear.”
“You will always be a true friend of Israel,” she added.
Israel's ambassador the the UN Danny Danon on Twitter thanked Haley for "standing with the truth without fear" and "for representing the values common to Israel and the United States."
He said she “helped lead to a change in Israel’s status in the UN.”

Detailing her achievements during the press conference on Monday Haley referred to Trump's historic and controversial decision to relocate the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. "We will put our embassy where we want to put our embassy,” she said, defending the move that was met with a slew of international criticism and overturned decades long US policy.
Kulanu MK Michael Oren said that Haley “enlightened world against the dark forces of the United Nations” and expressed regret over her resignation.
“She took on the hypocrisy and bias at the UN with conviction and clarity,” Yair Lapid, chairperson of the centrist Yesh Atid party said.
Those on the left of the Israeli political spectrum appeared to remain silent.
Earlier this year in June, Haley announced the US’s decision to withdraw its membership from the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for what she described as its hypocrisy and “unrelenting” bias against Israel.
She charged the "disproportionate focus and unending hostility towards Israel is clear proof that the UN Human Rights Council is motivated by political bias, not human rights."
The year before, the US announced its withdrawal from the another of UN’s Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) citing among other issues a “continuing anti-Israel bias.”, Haley, after the body declared the Old City of Hebron to be Palestinian territory, called it an "affront to history.”
In August, the US announced its decision to end its financial support for the UN agency dedicated to providing support humanitarian assistance for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) criticizing it as “irredeemably flawed” and perpetuating an “endlessly crisis-driven service provision model.”
“We appreciate the strong leadership of @nikkihaley @USUN. Thank you for consistently standing up for America’s interests and our democratic ally Israel,” the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC tweeted who by she was warmly regarded.
