Israeli authorities revealed Tuesday that an Israeli citizen kidnapped last week in Nigeria and held for ransom has been safely released.
The 62-year-old Israeli man was kidnapped by armed men on the outskirts of the Nigerian capital Abuja. The man’s Nigerian civilian driver was killed during a gun battle during the kidnapping.
The kidnapped Israeli was released after lengthy negotiations between the kidnappers and the CEO of the firm for which he worked.
A statement said that the Foreign Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry, the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria, the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria Mr. Guy Feldman, Consul Nadav Goren and the Embassy Security Officer all assisted in the resolution of the matter in coordination with the relevant Israeli authorities.
In 2015, an Israeli construction worker was killed during an attempted kidnapping near Abuja.
Nir Rosmarin, 43, who was employed by a construction firm in the African country, was attacked by four armed men who came to the construction site where he worked and attempted to kidnap him.
Rosmarin, who was from the central Israeli city of Kfar Saba, managed to evade his captors but was later shot and killed.
