President of Somaliland expected to make first visit to US in the coming days, in a push for state recognition

The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, is scheduled to travel to Washington in the coming days for his first visit to the United States since taking office. This trip comes a few months after Israel’s decision to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent state, a first by a UN member country.

The visit represents a new and important step in Somaliland's efforts to obtain broader international recognition. The territory, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has since functioned as an autonomous entity with its own institutions, but is still not recognized by the majority of the international community.

Israel had officially recognized Somaliland in December 2025, paving the way for swift rapprochement between the two countries. In June, President Abdullahi made a historic visit to Israel, during which he was notably received by President Isaac Herzog and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana.

Somaliland had also inaugurated an embassy in Jerusalem.

The question of possible American recognition remains open, however. After the Israeli decision, Donald Trump indicated that he was not yet ready to take this step and that he wanted to study the matter first. The visit of the Somaliland president to Washington could now allow Hargeisa to present its arguments directly to the American administration.

Somaliland presents a particular strategic interest due to its location on the Horn of Africa, near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the main maritime routes of the Red Sea. Israel and Somaliland have already expressed their willingness to develop their cooperation in several areas, including security, agriculture, water, health, and the economy.
