Lawyer says made payment from own money with no reimbursement; gives no details for reason behind payment

US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer said Tuesday he paid $130,000 of his own money to a porn star who once said she had an affair with Trump.

The attorney, Michael Cohen, said in a statement to the New York Times that he was not reimbursed for the payment to the actress, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford and goes by Stormy Daniels.

"In a private transaction in 2016, I used my own personal funds to facilitate a payment of $130,000 to Ms. Stephanie Clifford," Michael Cohen said in a statement. "Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly."

Cohen insisted the payment was legal, and declined to give details such as why he made the payment, the Times said.

"The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone," Cohen's statement said.

In January, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump's lawyer paid hush money to Daniels before the election to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump.

Trump, who was a private citizen when the 2006 sexual encounter with Clifford allegedly took place, was married at the time and his wife, Melania, had given birth to their son less than four months earlier.

A White House official categorically denied the report, and a statement issued by Cohen on Trump's behalf said that the president "vehemently denied" any encounter between the two.

Clifford, 38, has also denied anything ever went on between them.

But In Touch magazine published a 2011 interview with Daniels last month in which she expounds at length and in detail on their relationship and what she described as their "textbook generic" sex.

Several women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct before he assumed office, claims he dismisses as lies.
