Some 200 gravestones defaced with swastika graffiti in Illinois cemetery
More than 200 gravestones in an Illinois cemetery were defaced with swastika graffiti, police told local media outlets Sunday.
Local police believe the incident at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates Cemetery in Glen Carbon, Illinois was perpetrated as an act of vandalism but are also investigating whether it was a hate crime.
CNN reported that a 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of his involvement in the incident. Police said further details about the man’s identity would be revealed after criminal charges were filed.

A spate of similar acts of vandalism targeting Jewish cemeteries or gravestones across the United States in 2017 sparked concern of rising anti-Semitism in the country.
In one of the largest incidents, more than 500 headstones were found broken and overturned in a Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia. Jewish cemeteries in Missouri, Pennsylvania, and New York were also vandalized around the same time.
Jewish groups have warned that anti-Semitic incidents appear to be on the rise, and some, such as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) NGO, have accused President Donald Trump of not being forceful enough in his response.
