Search and rescue operations are underway in Arizona’s Grand Canyon after severe flash floods left at least one person dead and approximately 20 hikers missing, according to US media reports.

The flooding began Saturday afternoon, triggering mudslides and sending powerful torrents of water through several areas of the national park. More than 60 people have been evacuated, while trails and critical infrastructure have sustained extensive damage.

Authorities said every pedestrian bridge spanning Bright Angel Creek had been destroyed. A major water pipeline serving tourist facilities and residential areas was also knocked out of service.

The disruption prompted park officials to temporarily suspend overnight stays at several hotels and lodges. Residents and visitors have also been asked to conserve water.

The National Park Service is coordinating with Arizona emergency personnel to continue evacuations and search areas where people may remain stranded.

Videos posted on social media showed muddy floodwater surging through the canyon at high speed and debris spilling across affected routes.
