The former US president’s son claimed Israel let the massacre happen to justify its plans for Gaza
Hunter Biden, the son of former US president Joe Biden, floated a conspiracy theory that Israel deliberately allowed the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack to happen as a pretext for carrying out its own plans in Gaza.
Speaking to London’s LBC radio, Biden claimed Israel “knew what was coming” and “allowed it to happen” to pursue a plan that would otherwise never have received a “green light.”
No evidence supported the allegation of deliberate Israeli complicity. Reports that political leaders and security officials ignored warning signs did not establish a conspiracy to let the massacre happen.
Biden cited a disputed Haaretz report alleging that the United Arab Emirates’ leader personally warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the intentions of Hamas’s Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar. He accused Netanyahu of receiving the warning and doing “absolutely nothing about it.”
Netanyahu denied the newspaper’s account and threatened to sue.
Biden also described the subsequent Gaza war as “akin to genocide,” while acknowledging that the term was “very loaded.” He called Hamas “horrific.”
Israel rejected genocide allegations and said it sought to limit civilian casualties in a war that saw Hamas use civilians as human shields and conduct military operations from homes, hospitals, schools and mosques.
Biden repeatedly criticized Israel during other recent appearances on the podcast circuit. His allegation echoed claims circulated by anti-Israel activists and commentators that Israel permitted the October 7 massacre to justify its military campaign in Gaza.
The Hamas-led attrocity was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
