White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her position at the end of August, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday, saying she wants to devote more time to her young children and family.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Leavitt as “one of my most reliable associates,” saying he “completely understands and respects” her decision. He also described her as a “true leader” who did a “phenomenal job,” calling her one of the best press secretaries in presidential history.
Leavitt confirmed her departure shortly afterward, describing the decision as “bittersweet.” She said that after returning from maternity leave, she realized she could not balance the demands of the press secretary role with being the mother her two young children deserve.

“I felt deep down that I could not be the best mother that my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required by the position of White House press secretary,” Leavitt said.
Despite stepping down from the White House, Leavitt is expected to remain involved as a senior outside adviser to Trump and could play a significant role within the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Leavitt, who was appointed at age 28, became the youngest White House press secretary in U.S. history. She was also the first woman to give birth while serving in the position.
Trump has not yet announced who will succeed her as White House press secretary.
