Marco Rubio rules out a run for the 2028 US presidential election
The Secretary of State claims to have "no plans" for the 2028 presidential election, while JD Vance appears to be one of the main contenders to succeed Donald Trump
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that he is not currently planning to run in the 2028 presidential election, according to remarks reported Wednesday by NBC News.
"I don't know what the future holds for me, but I currently have no plans in that regard," he told the Colombian channel RCN. "I am not running for anything at the moment. I am dedicating myself 100% to my work," he added.
Marco Rubio is also serving as Donald Trump’s interim national security adviser. According to a source cited by NBC News, he has also privately stated that he does not intend to run in 2028, while leaving open the possibility of a future candidacy.
A withdrawal by Marco Rubio from the race could make it easier for Vice President JD Vance to run. A close associate of the latter says he will consider this possibility after the midterm elections, with no decision or announcement currently planned.

Neither Marco Rubio nor JD Vance has officially announced their candidacy. However, Donald Trump has regularly mentioned both men among the figures likely to carry the MAGA movement's torch.
The American president even raised the possibility of seeing them form a “dream ticket,” while specifying that this was not an official endorsement. In August 2025, Trump had introduced JD Vance as a potential frontrunner for 2028 and Marco Rubio as a possible running mate.
Sec. Rubio had already attempted to secure the Republican nomination in 2016. The secretary withdrew after his defeat by Donald Trump in the Florida primary, before going on to support the future president. Elected to the Senate in 2010, Rubio remained there until his confirmation as Secretary of State in 2025.
