Pennsylvania man arrested over alleged Islamic State-inspired plot
A 21-year-old man was arrested after acquiring a semi-automatic rifle as part of an alleged attack plot in support of the Islamic State
US authorities have arrested a 21-year-old man suspected of planning an attack in Pennsylvania on behalf of the Islamic State group. The suspect first came to the attention of federal authorities over alleged extremist activity while he was still a minor.
Federal agents arrested him Sunday while searching a hotel room in Cranberry Township. He has been charged with receiving a firearm while allegedly intending to use it in connection with a crime or an act of terrorism. A federal judge ordered him to remain in custody pending further proceedings.
According to court documents, the suspect used a Telegram account to distribute extremist material and issue threats. He allegedly indicated that a violent attack would occur within three months and shared documents containing instructions for making explosives and car bombs.
During the search, investigators recovered a Panther Arms semi-automatic rifle, more than 150 rounds of ammunition, several loaded magazines, a rifle scope and a bipod. Agents also seized pepper spray, a prayer mat and a disposable cellphone.
The suspect’s primary cellphone was reportedly stored inside two Faraday pouches, which are designed to block electronic signals and prevent a device from being located or tracked.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the suspect had been developing several possible attack plans while viewing Islamic State propaganda and acquiring weapons.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche praised the federal agents involved in the operation, saying their intervention disrupted the alleged plot before any lives were placed at risk.
Federal authorities had reportedly monitored the suspect since 2023 because of his activity in a Telegram group. An earlier search of his computer uncovered a recording in which he allegedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.
The suspect was subsequently held in juvenile detention from April 2023 until March 2026. After his release, a probation officer alerted the FBI after reportedly finding a black banner believed to represent the Islamic State among his belongings.
A further examination of his computer allegedly uncovered propaganda associated with the Islamic State and Hamas, as well as evidence suggesting that he had considered attacking a school.
Authorities said the suspect used the online alias “Hamza Al Rashid.” He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
