The Pentagon is quietly extending US troop deployments across the Middle East, a sign the six-month conflict with Iran could stretch well into next year, according to the Wall Street Journal. This comes even as senior military leaders have privately warned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that the pace of operations is unsustainable.
The US currently maintains roughly 50,000 troops and 19 warships, including two aircraft carriers and 13 guided-missile destroyers, in the region as part of what officials describe as an open-ended strategy meant to preserve President Trump's options in the conflict. Army air-defense units have seen standard deployment timelines extended from nine months to a year, and some units originally stationed in Europe and the Pacific have already been deployed for more than a year.
The USS Gerald R. Ford spent 11 months at sea before returning home in May, the longest deployment for a US aircraft carrier since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The USS Abraham Lincoln is currently returning home after its own extended deployment. The USS Theodore Roosevelt is preparing for a longer-than-normal deployment that could keep it in the region into spring if sent to support Iran operations.

The extended deployments come as Trump has embraced an economic pressure campaign aimed at forcing Iran back to the negotiating table, while privately discussing with aides whether to declare the war over. Aides have cautioned that further escalation could hurt Republican prospects in the November midterms, though Trump has said electoral considerations are not factoring into his decisions.
Analysts say the strategy signals the administration's intent to sustain the conflict over the long term. However, logistics have also grown more difficult, with the Navy forced to rely heavily on the remote base at Diego Garcia for resupply due to the loss of regional logistics support.
