Trump’s weight gain raises concerns among medical experts
Despite the concerns, Trump’s latest official medical report described him as being in “excellent health” and “fully fit” to perform his duties

US President Trump’s reported weight gain is drawing scrutiny from medical experts amid broader questions about bruising on his hands, swelling in his ankles and occasions when he has appeared drowsy.
According to a White House medical report released in May, Trump weighs 238 pounds. That is 23 pounds more than the weight listed in his booking record when he was indicted in Georgia in August 2023, The Washington Post reported.
At 6 feet 3 inches tall, Trump has a body mass index of 29.7, placing him just below the BMI threshold of 30 used to define obesity. He was previously classified as obese in 2019 and 2020.
Several physicians interviewed by the Post said the weight gain warrants attention. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, joint problems, reduced mobility and premature death.
“We know that obesity is a significant risk factor for many health problems,” said Scott Kahan, director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness. He said managing the president’s weight should be a medical priority.
White House physicians have advised Trump to improve his diet, exercise more and continue working to control his weight.
Trump is known for his preference for hamburgers, sweets and diet soda. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has publicly criticized the president’s eating habits while joking about his apparent physical resilience.
The president has also joked that he may need to take weight-loss medication. He previously said he wanted to avoid surpassing William Howard Taft, widely regarded as the heaviest president in US history.
Despite the concerns, Trump’s latest official medical report described him as being in “excellent health” and “fully fit” to perform his duties. The report said examinations found his cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and cognitive health to be good. His physician also said Trump received a perfect score on a cognitive screening test.
The White House attributed the swelling in Trump’s lower legs to chronic venous insufficiency. It said the bruising on his hands was caused by frequent handshaking and his daily use of aspirin, according to Reuters.
Officials have dismissed questions about Trump’s physical and mental fitness, citing his energy, workload and public availability. Outside physicians have cautioned, however, that excess weight remains a long-term health risk even when there is no immediate medical problem.
