'Resign from ICC immediately,' Trump calls on all countries to withdraw from the international court

President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

Trump used his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday to call on members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to withdraw from the institution, while focusing heavily on Iran, Gaza as well as a new US agreement over Greenland.

Trump sharply criticized the ICC, saying the United States would not allow US personnel or others to face investigations by a court that Washington does not recognize. "I call on all nations that are members of the ICC to officially resign from this rogue institution immediately," Trump told world leaders.

Turning to the Middle East, Trump thanked nearly 30 countries that have joined the US-backed Board of Peace established as part of his administration's Gaza plan. He thanked participating countries for contributing billions of dollars toward relief and reconstruction and specifically praised countries that committed troops, police and training to help stabilize Gaza.

Iran occupied a significant portion of Trump's address. The president said his administration opened negotiations with Tehran after he returned to office and offered economic cooperation in exchange for Iran ending its nuclear program and support for terrorism.

"But they refused. They absolutely refused," Trump said, adding that he had again urged Tehran to reach an agreement following US strikes on its nuclear program, only for Iran to reject the offer again.

Trump called on other countries to maintain Iran's economic isolation until Tehran ends attacks on commercial shipping, gives up its nuclear ambitions and stops supporting terrorism. He nevertheless left the door open to diplomacy, saying he believed an agreement could eventually be reached and insisting that Iran would never be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Trump concluded his discussion of Iran by saying the two countries would ultimately resolve their confrontation: "The United States and Iran will definitely get it done. We will get it done one way or the other."

A US official told i24NEWS that efforts were also underway to arrange direct talks between the United States and Iran during the General Assembly. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Trump is open to such talks.

Trump also announced that an agreement reached with Denmark and Greenland would be formally signed later on Tuesday. Trump said the deal would give the United States permanent control over security needs in Greenland and allow Washington to expand its military presence on the strategically important Arctic island.
