The US State Department has instructed diplomatic missions worldwide to urge host governments to strengthen security around Jewish communities during the upcoming High Holidays, according to an action cable reviewed by i24NEWS.

The cable directs US missions to request the deployment of “law enforcement, counterterrorism or military forces, as appropriate,” at synagogues and other venues hosting religious services or community events.

It also calls for increased protection along residential routes commonly used by Jewish worshippers. The document notes that congregants often walk along predictable routes at set times and may be readily identifiable by their clothing.

US missions were also told to encourage local authorities to provide security briefings and establish coordination channels with Jewish institutions, security organizations and businesses before the holidays.

In addition, the cable calls for authorities to develop ways of communicating imminent threats during periods when observant Jews refrain from using electronic devices.

A source told i24NEWS that the State Department issued a similar directive ahead of Passover.
