US soldier killed in Iraq, human remains found in Jordan after an Iranian attack

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Sunday that an American service member was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from an intercepted Iranian drone. A second soldier sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
In a separate statement, CENTCOM announced that unidentified human remains were discovered at the site of the July 17 Iranian attack on a US military base in Jordan. Recovery and identification efforts are ongoing.
The attack on the Jordan base previously left two US soldiers dead and a third reported missing. The Pentagon has not released the identities of the fallen service members, pending notification of their families.
Earlier Sunday, President Trump honored the two soldiers killed in Jordan, saying they "gave their lives to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons" and describing their deaths as evidence of "the cruelty of the Iranian regime."
The developments come as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate. Overnight, US forces carried out additional strikes on targets in southern Iran, while Kuwait's military said it activated its air defense systems to counter potential Iranian missile and drone threats.
