Mamdani’s wife liked social media posts celebrating October 7 Hamas attacks
The mayor defended her as a private citizen with no political role, while the revelations fuel a broader debate over public reactions to the conflict

The wife of Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, has come under scrutiny after reports about her social media activity related to the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel surfaced.
According to Jewish Insider, Rama Duwaji liked several posts on Instagram on the day of the Hamas assault on Israel in 2023.
One of the posts reportedly showed Palestinians crossing the Israeli border and described the incursion as an effort to “break the walls of apartheid.” Another post depicted Palestinians sitting on a captured Israeli military vehicle with a caption referencing “resisting apartheid since 1948.”
The report also said Duwaji liked two posts promoting anti-Israel demonstrations that took place the day after the attack.
Asked about the issue during a press conference, Mamdani defended his wife’s privacy and stressed that she holds no official role in his political career. “My wife is the love of my life and she is also a private person who has held no official position in my campaign or at City Hall,” he said.
Duwaji has not publicly responded to the reports. The couple met in 2021 and were married last year.
The issue has also sparked wider debate in U.S. political circles over public reactions to the October 7 attacks. Inna Vernikov, a Republican member of the New York City Council, criticized media coverage of the controversy and questioned how much attention would be paid to the mayor’s position on the matter.
The case has also been discussed by The New York Times, which described some of the posts as expressions of support for the Palestinian cause.
