Bulgaria’s Burgas to host Eurovision 2027 after historic first victory
EBU approves new rule allowing Eurovision winner to be denied hosting rights over security or geopolitical concerns
The Bulgarian coastal city of Burgas has been selected to host the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, the Bulgarian Broadcasting Corporation and the European Broadcasting Union announced Thursday.
Bulgaria earned the right to host the competition after winning Eurovision 2026 for the first time in the country’s history. Bulgarian singer Dara took the top spot with her song “Bangaranga,” while Israel’s Noam Betan finished second with “Michelle,” marking Israel’s second consecutive runner-up finish.
The 2027 contest will also take place under updated Eurovision rules approved by the European Broadcasting Union this week. Under the new regulations, a winning country could be prevented from hosting the following year’s competition if security concerns or geopolitical circumstances make it impractical.
The rule change could have implications for future Eurovision contests, particularly given Israel’s strong recent performances. Israel has reached the top five in each of the past four competitions and finished second in both 2025 and 2026, driven in large part by strong support from the public vote.
The decision to hold Eurovision 2027 in Burgas comes as the EBU prepares for a contest in which security and political considerations are expected to remain an important part of the planning.
