Indonesian rescuers launched a search operation Sunday after authorities lost contact with the Virgo Transport 8, a passenger ship carrying more than 240 people, in the Java Sea
The Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, said it received a report about two hours after contact was lost around 2am, with the ship's operator citing reports of bad weather
The vessel had departed Surabaya, in East Java, on Saturday at 10:13am local time, bound for Banjarmasin, and its last known position was in the Java Sea about 148 kilometers (87 miles) from a pier in Banjarmasin
The ship's manifest listed 241 passengers aboard, and there were no immediate reports of casualties
