2US President Trump asserted on Tuesday that the United States remained in contact with Iran and expressed his belief that an agreement could be reached to end the conflict. "I think an agreement will be reached. They want to talk to us. They talked to us again today... The relationship is evolving," he told reporters during a meeting with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Trump’s statement came as Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, reportedly met with the US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at the UN General Assembly, according to two Iranian officials to the NYT. Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to President Trump: "Why don’t you give New Jersey to the Israelis?"
Speaking to the Atlantic Council at the United Nations General Assembly, al-Sharaa recounted a story from his visit to the White House. Al-Sharaa says when President Donald Trump told him the Golan Heights was Israel's, the Syrian president retorted, “Why don’t you give New Jersey to the Israelis? You don’t own the Golan Heights to give, but you own New Jersey”
He expanded on the joke to the council, stating, "I believe New Jersey is full of Democrats, and they are not voting for Trump, so it would be good to give it to the Israelis. At least this is something you own. Trump doesn’t own the Golan Heights"
Regarding Israeli military action in Syria, al-Sharaa claimed that "It’s not appropriate that what happened on October 7 set Israeli policy for Syria," adding, "Israel needs to change its policy because it’s creating problems around it in order to maintain its security. This is not working for them"
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrives in New York ahead of his speech to the United Nations General Assembly
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff took to X overnight to summarize his meeting with the Iranian delegation at the United Nations General Assembly
“We engaged in lengthy talks with the Iranian delegation through the mediators, who shuttled between the two sides throughout the day. They successfully completed a round of discussions that we hope will prove constructive and promising. The mediators will continue their work,” Witkoff wrote in the post.
