“A reminder that AIDS is not over”: Tropical country declares state of emergency
The government of Fiji has declared a health emergency after a spike in infections among adults
The government of Fiji declared this week that the HIV virus has become a national health crisis. This comes against the backdrop of a worrying surge in infections that has led to one in every 60 adults in the country currently living with the virus.
In 2025, 2,016 new diagnoses were recorded, a figure 16 times higher than that registered in 2019, indicating that infections have spread from at-risk communities to the general population.
"According to estimates, one in every 60 adults is now living with HIV, compared to one in every 167 five years ago," said a government statement. In light of the worsening situation, the Minister of Health, together with four other ministers, has established a subcommittee to remove barriers and promote an urgent response.
Authorities have announced the expansion of free testing, the provision of preventive treatments, and the distribution of free medications with international assistance, focusing on reducing stigma.

The United Nations agency for combating AIDS (UNAIDS) welcomed the steps on Wednesday, given the estimate that less than half of the carriers in the country are aware of their condition. The organization's executive director, Winnie Byanyima, warned: "Fiji has recognized the urgency of the moment and is stepping up its response. This is also a stark reminder to the world that AIDS is not over. HIV epidemics can change rapidly, and countries need health and community systems that are ready to respond urgently."
