Rescue teams are searching for at least 1,384 people reported missing after catastrophic flooding struck communities along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday.

At least 165 people have been confirmed dead. Nepalese authorities said they had recovered 162 bodies, while Chinese officials reported three deaths in Tibet. Authorities warned that the toll could rise as search crews reach areas cut off by flooding and landslides.

The latest figures list 826 people as missing in Nepal and another 558 on the Chinese side of the border. Hundreds are foreign nationals, although officials have not yet provided a complete breakdown of the updated totals.

The disaster first struck near the Gyirong border crossing in Tibet before surging into Nepal and sweeping through valleys along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi rivers, north and east of Kathmandu.

Footage showed a massive wall of water tearing through communities, carrying away buildings and buses as residents tried to escape.

The United States Geological Survey said the flooding may have been linked to the collapse of a glacier. A magnitude 5.2 earthquake and several landslides were also recorded in the affected region.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry urged Israelis in Nepal to exercise extreme caution and avoid flood-hit areas or locations designated as high-risk by local authorities. Travelers were advised to follow official instructions, monitor weather alerts, stay away from rivers, tunnels and landslide-prone slopes, and avoid unnecessary travel on damaged or blocked roads. The ministry also recommended keeping phones charged and ensuring that relatives in Israel are informed of travelers’ locations and planned routes.
