The quake struck near the island of Flores shortly before 5 a.m. local time and was followed by dozens of aftershocks. Tsunami waves of less than one meter were recorded in several areas, prompting authorities to issue a warning that was lifted about three hours later.
Most of the reported deaths were in and around Maumere, the main town in Sikka Regency, where buildings collapsed and several people were pulled from rubble. Around 2,000 people were evacuated in Nagekeo, close to the epicenter, while landslides and disrupted communications hampered efforts to reach the area.
The earthquake was felt across East and West Nusa Tenggara and parts of South Sulawesi, with power outages and damage to homes, government buildings and other facilities reported. Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire and is frequently struck by earthquakes.
