A tense standoff at the Philippine Senate spiraled into violence Wednesday night as gunfire erupted within the legislative complex during a federal attempt to arrest Senator Ronald dela Rosa.

The former police chief, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, has been seeking refuge inside the building under the protection of allied lawmakers since Monday.

The chaotic scene unfolded just days after dela Rosa was captured on CCTV fleeing through the halls of Parliament to evade local agents.

While the source of the shots remains unclear, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed the security breach, stating the institution is "under attack" as riot police continue to surround the compound.

Despite the exchange of fire, Senate Secretary Mark Llandro Mendoza reported no immediate casualties, though Cayetano expressed grave concerns over the safety of those trapped inside as the government moves to enforce the international warrant.
