Tensions flare in Thailand: locals protest against tourists from Israel
Hundreds of residents of the island of Phuket demanded that the stay of tourists from Israel on the island be limited to two weeks
Israeli tourism has recently been breaking records in Thailand, but cracks are beginning to appear in the tropical paradise when it comes to the locals' attitude toward vacationers from Israel: criminal investigations, viral scandals, and a sense of local disgust are casting a shadow over the perfect holiday. As the headlines in the local news fill up with stories about "the ugly Israeli" or confrontations with the country's laws, it seems that the relationship between the kingdom and the Israeli traveler is facing a new and complicated test.
Tension peaked at Patong Beach in Phuket, where about one hundred and fifty protesters, mostly Muslims, held up signs under the slogan "Save Phuket." The demonstrators demanded strict enforcement against foreigners, with Israelis being the primary target: an unusual demand to shorten the visa from 30 days to just 15.
Despite the media buzz, many seats remained empty on the ground, but subsequent demonstrations have already turned more violent, including the waving of Palestinian flags in defiance of explicit instructions from the authorities.
The atmosphere also heated up in Koh Samui, where an Israeli family was expelled from a zoo by the French owner, who set up an Israeli flag as a shooting target. The Israeli response was swift: an Israeli resident of the country offered a cash reward for information that could harm the manager, prompting the authorities to cancel his visa instead.
It is a volatile chain of events that has placed Israelis at the center of the news in Thailand, and not for the right reasons.
Despite the tensions, the rush to the East is not stopping. The Thai Tourism Authority anticipates a record year in 2026 with over 442,000 visitors from Israel. The numbers prove that the Israeli love for fruit shakes and a good getaway is stronger than any protest or viral incident.
All that remains is to hope that the positive sentiment will once again dominate the narrative, and that the extremist minority will remain marginalized in the face of the famous Thai smile.
