Poll: 74% of French public believes anti-Semitism widespread problem inside country
The poll coincides with the 15th anniversary of Ilan Halimi's brutal killing in Paris.
At least 74 percent of French citizens believe that anti-Semitism is a widespread phenomenon in France, according to a new poll published on Tuesday.
Commissioned by the umbrella organization CRIF (Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France), which represents the interest of the Jewish community in France, the polls also found 56 percent also believe that anti-Semitism is more severe today than a decade ago.
The survey, which was carried out by the IPSOS institute, coincides with the 15th anniversary of Ilan Halimi's brutal killing in Paris.
On 20 January 2006, prosecutors say that Halimi, a French Jew of Moroccan descent, was kidnapped tortured, and then murdered by a group calling itself the Gang of Barbarians. Of the 27 people arrested in the case, three were acquitted.
Regarding Halimi's murder, 69 percent of French people said they were aware of the details of the incident.
But for individuals under the age of 35, the poll found that only 46 percent of the public was aware of Halimi's tragic demise.
In addition, more than 88 percent of those polled also believe that the fight against anti-Semitism in France should be a priority for public authorities.
The survey, which also questioned the perception of anti-Zionism, shows that 38 percent of French people do not know what the term means.
