Slovenian PM lambasted over tweet invoking anti-Semitic Soros conspiracies
Soros, a Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor, has emerged as a figure of hate in anti-Semitic conspiracies
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Thursday lashed out at his Slovenian counterpart over a "tasteless" tweet invoking an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory and summoned Slovenia's ambassador to complain.
Slovenia's right-wing Prime Minister Janez Jansa, whose country holds the six-month rotating EU presidency, posted a picture on Twitter calling several Dutch MEPs "puppets" of financier George Soros, including a recently deceased ally of Rutte's.
"Tasteless tweet by Janez Jansa (@JJansaSDS) about MEPs. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms," tweeted Rutte.

Soros, a Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor who went on to become a billionaire, has in recent years emerged as a figure of hate for far-right and anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists, in Europe as well as in America.
Though the tweet later appeared to have been deleted, Jansa fired back an unrepentant salvo at Rutte.
The president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, has likewise slammed Jansa, saying: "We urgently call on Janez Jansa to cease the provocations against members of the European Parliament. Attacks on members of this house, are also attacks on European citizens."
The row is the latest in a series of confrontations that Slovenia's right-wing premier has had on social media, where he has also attacked the national press agency as a "national disgrace."
