Police in Belgium have arrested a man who is suspected of attempting to run down an ultra-Orthodox father and son on an Antwerp street on Saturday.

Security camera footage of the incident shows a black Seat Ibiza car speeding through a bike lane towards the two pedestrians. The car breaches the curb onto the sidewalk but then swerves sharply back onto the road after the two jump behind a lamp post for protection.

The footage shows the father running after the car as it speeds away.

The Antwerp-based Joods Actueel Jewish monthly publication reported that the driver of the vehicle, who was tracked down by police through footage of the licence plate, had “foreign origins.”

The man will appear before a court on Sunday, where he stands accused of attempted manslaughter.
