At least five people were killed Monday in a shooting in Stade, a city west of Hamburg in northern Germany, according to initial reports.

Police launched a major emergency operation on Dankersstraße and urged residents to avoid the area. Authorities said a male suspect has been detained, while the motive remains unclear.

German news agency DPA quoted a police spokesperson as saying shots were fired near a youth center in the city center. Stade is home to around 50,000 people.
