Donald Trump hails the historic victory of the AfD in Germany
The American president applauded the rise of the far-right party in Saxony-Anhalt, where it achieved its best result in regional elections.
US President Donald Trump on Monday hailed the historic victory of Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt, in a message posted on his Truth Social network.
Without directly mentioning the AfD, the American president welcomed the rise of the "populist party" and attributed this result to the rejection of German migration policy.
“They have finally had enough of the terrible immigration laws that have done so much harm to Germany. They are becoming stronger and will not tolerate it anymore,” he wrote.
Donald Trump concluded his message with the acronym "MGGA," meaning "Make Germany Great Again," a variation of his own political slogan "Make America Great Again."
The AfD received 43.8% of the votes on Sunday in Saxony-Anhalt. This is the best result ever achieved by the far-right party in a regional election in Germany.
This performance confirms the electoral progress of the party, which is particularly strong in the eastern states of the country. However, Donald Trump’s public support could fuel debates about the relationship between the German nationalist movement and the entourage of the American president.
