British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday reaffirmed the strength of the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States while confirming that London will not take part in offensive strikes against Iran.

Speaking at a press conference at Downing Street, Starmer emphasized that military and intelligence cooperation with Washington remains fully operational, despite recent political tensions and criticism from Donald Trump.

He highlighted close coordination between British and American forces, including shared bases and 24-hour intelligence sharing.

Starmer confirmed that the UK deliberately abstained from the initial US-Israeli strikes against Iran, citing Britain’s national interest and a preference for a diplomatic approach to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

At the same time, he announced steps to strengthen the British defensive presence in the Middle East, including the deployment of four additional Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar to support regional partners.

Protecting British citizens in the region remains a top priority, Starmer said, noting that the first government-chartered evacuation flight has departed from Oman, with more planned. Over 4,000 Britons have already left the region via the United Arab Emirates.

Acknowledging public concerns over the conflict’s impact on the economy and energy prices, the prime minister stressed the importance of de-escalation and reiterated that the crisis will ultimately need to be resolved through negotiation.
