The New York Knicks have won the NBA championship for the first time in more than half a century, beating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the Finals in Texas.
The victory sent New Yorkers into the streets in celebration, with watch parties held outside Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, and Wollman Rink after Mayor Zohran Mamdani coordinated with the team to organize public viewing events across the city.
"Make this a night that reflects the very best of our city," Mamdani said ahead of the game, also urging fans to stay safe following several violent incidents targeting Spurs fans in New York, including an assault that sent one fan to hospital and an attack on a fast food worker wearing a Spurs jersey.
The Knicks last won the NBA title in 1973, making this the first time they took home the trophy in over 52 years.
