Moscow says 456 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight
Moscow says the overnight barrage targeted roughly 15 Russian regions and Crimea, with reported casualties and strikes reaching deep into the country’s industrial heartland
Russia says it intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight from Sunday into Monday, in what Moscow described as one of the largest aerial attacks since the beginning of the war.
According to Russia’s Ministry of Defense, the drones were shot down over roughly 15 Russian regions as well as Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014 and which remains internationally recognized as part of Ukraine.
Russian authorities reported casualties and damage following the strikes. In Tatarstan, the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk, located nearly 1,600 kilometers (almost 1,000 miles) from the Ukrainian border, was hit in what regional officials described as a “massive” attack.
Authorities said both industrial and civilian sites were targeted and reported several deaths, although no precise casualty figure was immediately provided.
In the border region of Belgorod, a woman was also killed after a drone struck a residential building in Novaya Tavolzhanka, according to local authorities.
The reported barrage highlights the growing intensity of long-range attacks between Russia and Ukraine, as both sides increasingly target areas far from the front lines. More than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain stalled.
Drone and missile strikes against infrastructure and populated areas have increased in recent months, contributing to mounting civilian casualties on both sides. Despite Russia’s extensive air-defense network, Ukraine has continued to demonstrate its ability to conduct strikes deep inside Russian territory.
