Russia behind failed Leipzig airport drone attack, Germany says following investigation
The federal investigation showed a "professional" level of technical expertise that could only indicate Russian involvement
Germany has accused Russia of being behind last month's drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, in an Interior Ministry announcement on Tuesday.
"The federal government holds Russia responsible for the attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport," the Ministry said.
On August 4, a drone carrying explosives was discovered close to Ukrainian cargo planes at the airport. The drone had failed to explode due to a faulty detonator.
A second drone was discovered to have collided with another cargo plane, while a third drone was discovered near the airport 10 days later.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said in the announcement that the attack followed an established "hybrid warfare" pattern used by Russia.

He also said that the analysis showed a "professional" level of technical expertise and planning that could only indicate Russian involvement.
In response to the attack, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the termination of other diplomatic facilities.
Russia rejected any involvement and said it would respond to the "anti-Russian" decisions.
European leaders rallied to support Germany, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen saying that the EU was preparing additional sanctions.
