A large-scale Ukrainian drone assault struck the Moscow region overnight, killing at least three people and injuring more than a dozen others, according to Russian officials.

Authorities said the attack began in the early hours of Saturday morning, with explosions reported across several areas surrounding the Russian capital. Regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said a woman was killed in Khimki, northwest of Moscow, while two men died in a village in the Mytishchi district. Several homes were reportedly damaged in the strikes.

In Moscow itself, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 12 people were injured, most of them workers at a construction site near a refinery. He added that the facility remained operational despite the attack, though nearby residential buildings sustained damage.

Russia-Ukraine war: Kremlin tells diplomats to leave Moscow amid fears of big strike

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 556 Ukrainian drones over multiple regions, including annexed Crimea and areas surrounding the Black and Azov Seas.

The strikes come amid renewed escalation between Russia and Ukraine following the collapse of a short-lived ceasefire reportedly brokered by the United States. Kyiv has repeatedly said it targets military and energy infrastructure inside Russia in response to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended such operations on Friday, saying Ukraine has the right to strike oil and military facilities used to support Russia’s war effort.
