Russian drone strikes near Polish border hit truck and train, Kyiv says attacks target NATO's doorstep
A Russian drone struck near the Yahodyn border crossing, and another hit a passenger train locomotive in Ukraine's Volyn region, both within a few kilometers of Poland

A Russian drone struck a truck less than a kilometer (half a mile) from the Polish border near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing, destroying the vehicle, Border Guard spokesman Maj. Dariusz Sienicki told Polish news outlet Wirtualna Polska. The crossing itself was not hit, and traffic between the two countries is flowing normally.
No one was injured on the Polish side, according to Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Gałecka.
Separately, Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said a drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train in the Volyn region, two kilometers (about a mile) from the Polish border, with no injuries reported. The company said a monitoring team had warned the train crew of the threat.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Polish systems detected an attack by about a dozen Russian Geran-5 jet-powered drones in western Ukraine, with one striking about a kilometer from the Polish border and another about five kilometers (3.1 miles) away. "Our airspace was protected by F-16s, helicopters and a Saab airborne early warning aircraft. There was no violation of our border," he wrote on X.
The incidents were part of a wider overnight Russian air assault on Ukraine. Polish authorities issued alerts in the eastern Lublin and Podkarpacie regions and scrambled fighter jets as a precaution, with the operation ending before 10 am.
Polish Armed Forces Operational Command spokesman Lt. Col. Jacek Goryszewski said the threat had been "real and close," with some drones operating within several to a dozen kilometers of the Polish border. In July, a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile breached Polish airspace and crashed in eastern Poland, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
