Israel: Gov't approves extending lockdown as new infections surge
Lockdown to remain in place until at least October 14, new protest regulations confirmed in overnight vote

The Israeli government voted to extend the nationwide lockdown on the country by three days in an overnight vote, keeping the restrictions in place by at least October 14.
The vote also saw the government confirm the new rule banning Israelis from traveling more than 1 kilometer from home to take part in political protests and demonstrations during lockdown -- a contentious decision that the Knesset (Israel Parliament) earlier approved.
The arrangement, lamented by the opposition leaders, will remain in place for a week.
The cabinet also approved a number of measures aimed at tightening the rules, including the closure of Ben-Gurion airport from Thursday until October 14.
Passengers will reportedly still be able to enter the country, however, provided that they do so in compliance with the relevant regulations, including mandatory self-isolation upon arrival.
The regulations also include a fine of NIS 500 -- about $146 -- for those found visiting the sukkahs (temporary booths erected for Sukkot festivities) of non-family during the holiday of Sukkot, which begins Friday evening.
