Accidental discovery in Jerusalem: Second temple-era burial cave uncovered during police operation
Border Guard soldiers discovered ancient tombs and other archaeological remains beneath a structure while conducting searches connected to an ongoing dispute between local families
Jerusalem Border Guard soldiers uncovered an ancient burial cave and additional archaeological finds during an operation in the Silwan neighborhood, police said.
The soldiers were conducting searches and accompanying government representatives at a compound associated with people involved in an ongoing violent conflict between families in the area.
According to police, the operation was part of an effort by the Jerusalem District to reach the homes of those allegedly connected to the violence.
During the activity, soldiers discovered a burial cave and other archaeological remains beneath a structure.
Experts from the Israel Antiquities Authority were called to the scene. A preliminary examination indicated that the tombs date to the Second Temple period, which extended from the late sixth century BCE until 70 CE.
Police and Border Guard personnel are securing the site in coordination with the Israel Antiquities Authority while specialists continue examining and handling the finds.
