Following yesterday’s comments from a US official about American pressure on Israel to moderate its response to Hezbollah violations — and Israel’s denial — an Israeli security source tells i24NEWS: “We have not yet completed our investigation into the incident, and therefore the full response has not yet been completed.”
Meanwhile, the latest round of Israel-Lebanon talks in Rome has concluded.
An Israeli source tells i24NEWS the negotiating team conveyed that the pilot zones will not be expanded before Israel assesses how the existing zones are functioning. That assessment is not yet ready to begin, the source says, because the parameters for implementation and success metrics were only agreed during the latest talks.
Borders: Lebanese reports pointed to progress, but Israeli sources say discussions on the issue remain at a very preliminary stage.
Monitoring: Israel initially wanted to oversee implementation itself. The US did not want to deploy forces, and the possibility of bringing in foreign forces is now being considered.
Israeli officials stress that no decision has been made, and that any country selected for the monitoring role must not be a state acting against Israel at the ICC or ICJ.
