IDF nears completion of key phase in southern Lebanon operation
The IDF's Northern Command is set to present a plan to the clear villages along the southern Lebanon border with Israel as forces secure a 'commanding terrain line'

Ahead of the next phase of operations in Lebanon, the IDF is finalizing its deployment along what it defines as the “commanding terrain line,” a key axis in southern Lebanon designed to neutralize immediate threats to northern Israeli communities. Military officials say the current stage, focused on securing areas used for Hezbollah anti-tank fire and short-range rocket launches, is nearing completion.
According to the IDF, forces are expected to complete the stabilization phase in the coming days, consolidating control over elevated terrain roughly 8 kilometers from the border. This marks a significant milestone in the ground operation, which aimed to seize positions from which the majority of frontline threats were launched.
The maneuver unfolded in three phases: initial positioning along a defensive line, a rapid forward advance, and the establishment of control over dominant terrain. During the operation, troops uncovered evidence of newly developed Hezbollah infrastructure in frontline villages, including in areas previously assessed as unpopulated.
Military officials say Hezbollah is attempting to link negotiations over its status in Lebanon with broader talks involving Iran. The IDF is working to prevent such linkage as part of its wider operational and strategic approach.
A senior IDF officer cautioned against overestimating achievable objectives, stating, “We need to be humble,” and adding, “I don’t see how the disarmament of Hezbollah is a feasible goal for the war.” The remarks reflect ongoing challenges, including limited confidence in the Lebanese government’s capacity, Israel’s broader focus on the Iran front, and considerations surrounding the duration of the conflict.
At the same time, Northern Command is preparing to present Israel’s political leadership with a comprehensive plan to clear and dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure in border villages. The proposal includes the demolition of structures used by the group in areas adjacent to the border, including villages such as Kila.
