IDF says mysterious object that entered Israeli airspace over the weekend was likely a balloon, not a drone
The IDF said the distinction between a drone and a bird is subtle, so no risks are taken once a threat is identified. The IDF is continuing to evaluate its detection systems to improve identification

The IDF said an in-depth investigation into the unidentified object that entered Israeli airspace last Saturday night found that it “likely possessed characteristics of a balloon or a hot-air-buoyed device.” In a statement from the IDF Spokesperson, the military said the object’s origin and purpose cannot be determined with certainty at this stage.
The IDF said it can be confirmed that the object was not a drone or UAV. It added that the object may have been an innocuous one that drifted into Israeli territory.
According to the statement, Air Force surveillance and detection systems detected the object, tracked it, and directed ground forces during the response. As is standard procedure, defensive measures in local communities were reinforced, including the deployment of defense squads, pending the completion of all related checks. The object has not been located on the ground, and there have been no changes to Home Front Command directives, the IDF said.
The statement also addressed the recent increase in reports of false alarms and interceptions. The IDF said the Air Force has been engaged in multi-theater detection and interception operations throughout the war, with the safety of civilians and forces deployed deep within the territory as its top priority.
“The distinction between a drone and a bird is very subtle; therefore, no risks are taken,” the statement said. It said that upon identifying a threat, a rapid process is initiated to intercept the target.
The IDF said it is continuing to conduct aerial and ground scans of the area. It said it is constantly evaluating its detection systems to enhance identification capabilities and to derive lessons from operational incidents of this nature.
