Israel’s Iron beam has arrived- but it’s still not ready for war - report

Presented as a potential revolution in Israeli air defense, the Iron Beam laser system was delivered to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) last December. However, the system is still not operational, according to a senior Defense Ministry official quoted by Ynet.

So far, only one Iron Beam unit has been delivered to the IDF. The procedures and technical adjustments required before the system can be deployed in the field have not yet been completed. The exact reasons for the delay have not been disclosed.

Developed by Israeli defense company Rafael, Iron Beam is designed to complement existing air-defense systems, particularly Iron Dome. The high-energy laser system is intended to intercept threats including drones, rockets, and mortar shells at ranges of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Its biggest advantage is expected to be its exceptionally low operating cost. Each laser interception could cost only a few shekels, compared with interceptor missiles that can cost tens of thousands of dollars each.

However, developing the system has required an investment of several billion shekels. Deploying Iron Beam on a large scale would also require Israel to acquire a substantial number of units to provide effective coverage across the country.

Despite the delivery of the first system, the Defense Ministry has reportedly not yet placed orders for additional units. Budgetary constraints may be contributing to the delay, although no official explanation has been provided.

Rafael officials say further technical adjustments are still needed before Iron Beam can officially enter operational service. The situation appears to contrast with comments made earlier this year by Rafael President Yuval Steinitz, who estimated that the final process would take only a few days.

Nevertheless, Rafael continues to manufacture Iron Beam for the IDF while investing in the broader development of laser-based weapons, which the company views as an important area of future defense technology.

At the same time, the Defense Ministry is pursuing several other solutions to counter the growing threat posed by drones. Iron Beam is therefore expected to become one layer of Israel's multi-tiered air-defense network rather than a standalone solution.

Rafael is also developing a next-generation interceptor intended to defend against hypersonic missiles, along with new naval defense capabilities. Among them is a system designed to intercept torpedoes, which the company has described as a kind of "naval Iron Dome."

For now, however, Iron Beam remains unavailable for operational use. Despite the considerable expectations surrounding the technology, the system must undergo further testing and adjustments before it can be deployed by the IDF.
