Less than a month ago, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disclosed during a live interview on Channel 14 that Iran had attempted to assassinate one of his sons. The information had previously been barred from publication by Israel’s military censor.

Now, nine months after Yair Netanyahu was urgently evacuated from Miami, i24NEWS has reported new details about the operation.

According to a US law-enforcement source cited by Newsmax, Israeli intelligence uncovered an Iranian plot in December 2025 to target the prime minister’s 35-year-old son, who was living in Hallandale Beach near Miami.

Intelligence assessments indicated that a suspected Iranian cell was already operating in the Miami area and monitoring Netanyahu’s home and daily routine.

Col. (res.) Ronen Cohen, chairman of Israel’s Advisory Committee for Personal Security, previously described the incident as an assassination attempt thwarted “at the very last minute.” Although Cohen discussed the case on the television program Cabinet Shishi, the military censor initially prevented Israeli news organizations from reporting his remarks.

After receiving the intelligence warning, Israeli officials alerted US authorities, and Netanyahu was instructed to leave his residence immediately. He reportedly departed without collecting his personal belongings and flew to Israel, arriving on December 7.

A separate report said Netanyahu’s security detail in Miami could not adequately respond to the threat. Two additional teams assigned to President Isaac Herzog, including a senior commander, were therefore sent from New York, where they were accompanying the president on an official visit.

The reinforcements reportedly helped evacuate Netanyahu to the airport, from where he flew to Israel later that night.

Yair Netanyahu had already taken extensive precautions during his two years in Miami because of concerns for his safety. At times, he reportedly avoided stepping onto the balconies of his residence, even before the alleged plot was uncovered.

Following the disclosure, the prime minister defended the extensive protection provided to his family.

“This security is not a luxury,” Netanyahu said, warning that without adequate protection, those seeking to harm his relatives “might succeed.”

In July, the Shin Bet extended security protection for Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, and his sons, Yair and Avner. His sons are reportedly expected to remain under protection for five years after Netanyahu leaves office.

The Shin Bet later confirmed that authorities had identified a “significant threat” against Yair Netanyahu. Following a security assessment, officials decided to evacuate him and his protection team to Israel immediately.
