Smuggling on the wind: Helium balloons could bypass Israel’s anti-drone defenses
A 220 pounds shipment found near Ein Yahav was reportedly bound for Jordan, as Regavim warns that smugglers are using helium-filled balloons to bypass anti-drone systems

The discovery of approximately 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of drugs in agricultural fields near Ein Yahav on Sunday has drawn attention to the reported use of helium-filled balloons for cross-border smuggling.
Initial assessments suggest the shipment was intended for Jordan, while the organization Regavim says smugglers are using balloons to bypass systems designed to detect and disrupt drones.
According to the organization Regavim, smuggling networks are now using helium-filled balloons to carry dozens of kilograms of contraband through the air. This method could allow them to evade detection and jamming systems designed to counter drones.
Unlike remotely piloted aircraft, balloons drift with air currents and do not require continuous communication with an operator. Traffickers reportedly use tracking devices and programmed release mechanisms to deliver packages to their intended destinations.
The balloons do not always reach their destinations. Several cannabis shipments have reportedly fallen in communities and kibbutzim across the Arava, as well as in the Hai-Bar nature reserve near Yotvata. According to a police official quoted by Israel National News, the lost shipments have cost criminal networks several million shekels.
Drones remain a common tool for smuggling along Israel’s borders with Egypt and Jordan. According to Israeli media reports, criminal networks use them to transport drugs into neighboring countries and weapons into Israel.
Yehuda Kapach, director of Regavim’s southern district, warned that the balloons could also be used to transport explosives or weapons. He called for a stronger security presence in border areas and action against the networks’ leaders and funding sources. He also urged tougher penalties and called for smuggling operations to be treated as security incidents.
